GOLF DIGEST April '97 Ranked Albemarle County as the #1 Best Place for Golfers to Retire!

WHERE TO RETIRE MAGAZINE Charlottesville has landed on a national publication's list of the best places for retirees to live, adding to a host of similar honors the area has received in recent years. In its current special issue, Where to Retire Magazine calls Charlottesville one of America's 100 best retirement towns, citing the University of Virginia, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the city's historic Downtown Mall among local attractions. The magazine quotes area couple Brian and Jean Mandeville, Minneapolis natives who moved to Central Virginia. 'We fell in love with Charlottesville,' Brian Mandeville is quoted as saying. 'The size of the town, its four-season climate, its topography, the general environment, charm and heritage.' Jean Mandeville points to 'the wonderful grand, friendly, well-mannered people.' According to city spokesman Maurice Jones, Charlottesville has become a fixture on similar lists in recent years. The city was named the second-best college town in the country for retirees by Modern Maturity, which also called it one of the 50 most active places in the nation. Further, Charlottesville has gained repeated recognition as one of Money Magazine's, 'Best Places in America', and Jones said A & E Television has named the city on of the 10 cities in the nation that 'have it all.' 'I think what really drives this type of thing is the quality of life,' Jones said. 'We have good people in this area who care about their community, we have relatively low crime rates and we have a nice mix of cosmopolitan life with suburban and rural lifestyles.'
